Apple will hold a press conference later this morning on the iPhone antenna problem. This comes in the wake of a Consumer Reports test confirming that the problem with the antenna and not just a software problem as Apple had originally claimed.
When a finger makes contact with the gap between in the bezel on the lower left of the iPhone 4, the antenna can be shorted out, significantly impacting performance. The problem is easily solved by covering the gap with a bumper or even tape. However, an internal memo from Apple indicates that the company is refusing to provide a bumper to solve the problem. Given the PR black eye the company has received lately, a bumper for each iPhone might be the best solution for the company.
UPDATE: Bloomberg reports that an Apple engineer informed Steve Jobs of the problem.
