On April Fools’ Day this year, the fine folks at ThinkGeek introduced a new product: Canned Unicorn Meat. Despite the fact it looks suspiciously like Spam with sparkles, they dared advertise it as “The New White Meat.” That got the National Pork Board’s attention. The National Pork Board, as you may be aware, has registered the trademark: “The Other White Meat.” The potential for confusion was obvious, at least according to the National Pork Board’s highly paid and professional legal counsel who sent them a cease and desist letter.
In a press release, ThinkGeek announced a public apology to the National Pork Board for the confusion.”It was never our intention to cause a national crisis and misguide the American citizens regarding the differences between the pig and the unicorn,” said Scott Kauffman, President and CEO of Geeknet – owner of ThinkGeek. Making good on the potential harm they may have done, visitors to ThinkGeek.com can take $10 off orders of $40 or more by using the code PORKBOARD at checkout. This offer is good until June 30at 11:59PM ET.
