The Time Domain Corporation has sold its ultra-wideband (UWB) real-time locating systems (RTLS) business unit to a newly-formed, privately-held company: PLUS Location Systems. Here’s the full press release:

Huntsville, Alabama (March 31, 2011) – Time Domain, a leader in ultra wideband (UWB) product development, announced that it has sold its PLUS business unit to PLUS Location Systems, a newly formed privately-held company. The sale includes the PLUS real time location system (RTLS) product line, applicable intellectual property, and all related assets. Key Time Domain personnel associated with the PLUS product line will be joining PLUS Location Systems. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Rachel Reinhardt, President and CEO of Time Domain, stated, “We are very pleased with this transaction. The sale of the PLUS business unit is an important step in our previously announced restructuring plan and will allow Time Domain to focus on our PulsON product line and technology, as well as our contract services business.” To coincide with the sale of PLUS, the company is launching a new UWB OEM module called the PulsON 400 (P400). Former Time Domain executive Paul Smelser will serve as the new company’s President. “This is a unique and exciting situation for PLUS Location Systems. Last week, Time Domain released the promised P400 module. Here again, their press release:

Huntsville, Alabama (April 7, 2011) – Time Domain, a leader in ultra wideband (UWB) product development, today announced the latest generation of its award-winning PulsON® product family, the PulsON 400 (P400) Ranging and Communications Module (RCM). This new OEM module, based on the company’s pioneering UWB radio frequency (RF) technology, allows product developers to integrate precision ranging and communications capabilities into their own UWB-enabled products.

The P400 RCM represents the culmination of over a decade of UWB research and product development, including five generations of custom silicon. The device provides targeted two-way time-of-flight range measurements fused with wireless communications, and is accompanied by a robust Applications Programming Interface (API) which supports user creation of random, time-slotted, or code-based navigation and tracking networks.

“The release of the P400 RCM is a significant milestone for our team. This module provides our customers with superior positioning and communications performance where other systems cannot deliver – indoors, through walls, and in other highly reflective spaces,” said Rachel Reinhardt, CEO of Time Domain. “We feel confident that our clients in the defense, safety/security, and robotics industries who have used our previous platforms will be delighted with the improved performance, smaller form factor, and lower price point of the P400 RCM.”

The P400 RCM is well-suited for many applications, including (but not limited to):

• Personnel safety and situational awareness around large vehicles
• Indoor and GPS-denied robot navigation and mapping
• Ad-hoc personnel tracking (e.g., military and first responders)
• Augmentation of GPS and inertial systems in high multipath environments

Time Domain offers a Development Kit which bundles four P400 RCMs with sample code and technical support hours to assist new users. The company also has an experienced Contract Services group available to provide design and development support, team with partners on proposal activities, and reduce the time to market for new products.

The company is now shipping P400 RCMs and Development Kits to customers. For more information on Time Domain and its UWB product offerings, please visit www.timedomain.com or call +1.256.922.9229.
